Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of travelling to the North Pole. I wanted to see polar bears and penguins (until I was told they’re way down south), I wanted to go fishing through a hole in the ice, and I was dead-set on seeing the Northern Lights. The idea of being the next Robert Peary was forever a dream of mine, and sleeping in an igloo just added to that temptation. When I heard about the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, my heart exploded with excitement. What would it be like to spend a night or two (or 5 for that matter) under the glow of the Northern Lights?

The Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort

In northern Finland, you can find the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort… if you know where to look. This winter wonderland is majestic all year round, but we recommend winter. The resort offers visitors a chance to experience the dark season in the most unique way possible. Rooms are hardly rooms, rather they’re glass igloos that provide a full view of the snow gently falling, the seasonless days stretching for hours, and most beautiful, the endless glow of green and blue that are the Northern Lights.

Staying In

What’s better than cuddling up with a cup of hot chocolate, wrapping yourself in a blanket and reading a steamy novel? Well, add the glow of the North Pole’s stratospheric sorcery and you’ve done it. For those who wish to stay indoors, the hotel provides all the amenities you need so that you don’t have to go out. But in all honesty, I really recommend you get out there.

Getting Out

For those of you who want to really experience the Lapland paradise, getting out is just for you. Safaris in the snow-covered forest? Absolutely! Would you like to see it all on horseback? In a snow tank? On a snowmobile? Or perhaps you would really like to take it to the extreme and join the “ice-breaking sampo” as the massive ship tears through the ice. My best offer would be a sled ride and get a full view of the Northern Lights while you yourself can feel like an Eskimo.

If Not Winter, Autumn

If you get to Kakslauttanen in autumn, you will still catch sight of the Northern Lights, but you will see many other things too. The natural environment in the mountains, hills, forests and rivers is so pure and clean that you can bring an empty water bottle and fill it up there. Wild berries and mushrooms paint the landscape, and those too can be picked and eaten on the spot. For someone like me, you can enjoy fishing, quad-biking, horse-riding, bike-riding and so much more.

Let’s Go

Since the family hotel opened, they have been working towards making guests’ experience one that will live in their hearts and minds forever. With a multilingual staff, all guests can feel comfortable and welcome. Pack your bags, grab a coat (or three) and head to the airport, because this is an experience you deserve not to miss!
