Bhangarh Fort, India
Let’s start this list with perhaps the creepiest place on the face of the Earth. The 17th century Bhangarh Fort in India was supposed to be a gift from a man to his younger brother, but today it is the most haunted place in India. After some freak stories of visitors not returning after visiting the fort, the Indian government declared the site illegal to enter between sunset and sunrise. They believe that ghosts take the unwanted visitors.
Svalbard Global Seed Vault, Norway
Have you ever thought about what might happen if all the food in the world ran out? Well, if you haven’t thought about it then don’t worry because other people have. On an island near Norway and close to Greenland is one of the largest banks in the world. Only this bank is different because it doesn’t hold money, but it does have the greens we all need in order to live. The massive “safety deposit box” has more than 840,000 different seed samples saved for the unlikely but possible event of global war or a global natural disaster.
Area 51, Nevada
How could ‘Area 51″ not make this list of prohibited places? It is probably the most famous of the lot! For anyone trying to get more than a glance at the outer fence, be prepared to face a constant military patrol, fighter jets and heat-seeking missiles. Is the site just an Air Force testing site or is it the crash-site of lost UFO’s? We will never know because when it comes to Area 51, the place has more conspiracies than Archie Andrews has freckles.
Pripyat, Ukraine
On April 26th, 1986, a disaster rocked the city of Pripyat in Ukraine that would change the history of thousands of Ukrainian residents forever. The Chernobyl nuclear plant experienced an explosion that released deadly radiation that spread for miles around. The accident was so severe that almost 50,000 residents needed to evacuate within hours of the disaster. Experts calculated that it would take something like 24,000 years until the area would be safe to return to. Today it is strictly forbidden to visit the ghost town of Pripyat.
Snake Island, Brazil
What could possibly be wrong with “Snake Island”? Well, let’s see… um, snakes! For every 5 square meters on the Brazilian island there is one snake. But we’re not talking about some random snake, the islands is the habitat of one of the deadliest snakes on Earth – the Golden Lancehead Viper. Its venom can eat through a human’s flesh and kill a person in no time. Only a select group of scientists gain permission to visit the island, once a year, to conduct research on these lethal snakes.
Lascaux Caves, France
In the northeast region France you can find a complex series of tunnels that house some of the oldest murals in history. The 600 artworks, which consist mainly of large animals, date back more than 17,000 years! Even though you once could visit, after a fungus outbreak, the site was closed and only few scientists got access to the site. Can you imagine what kind of insurance you would need for a place like this.
Tomb Of The Qin Shi Huang, China
The ancient Chinese believed that an emperor, an army general or a tribe leader should hold the same status in the afterlife as he did down on Earth. That’s where the Terracotta Army comes in. When China’s first Emperor, Qin Shi Huang died in 210 BC, his people had already built him an entire army out of clay to be with him in the afterlife. In 1974 when archaeologists found the 2000-strong army hidden underground, they realized that there might be much much more. Chinese authorities have forbidden excavation on the site as a sign of respect to the dead, and visitors can’t see more than a glimpse of the great emperor’s tomb.
North Sentinel Island, Andaman Islands
Have you ever heard of the Sentinelese people? Don’t worry, they haven’t heard of you either. The small island close to Bangladesh is one of the few places in the world where a tribe has had no contact with other humans. In 2008 two fisherman accidentally disembarked on the shores of the island, only to be killed by the tribe. Authorities forbid anyone from visiting the island.
Room 39, North Korea
How does North Korea’s fine leader manage to finance his lavish lifestyle? Take a look in Room 39 and you’ll find out. Only a few leaked sources have exposed that it is in this secret room that the Hermit State’s dictator conducts his very fraudulent business of counterfeiting $100 bills and less-than-legitimate Viagra. Apparently the effects of his homemade Viagra are atomic!
Poveglia, Italy
Do you believe in ghosts? Take a trip to the Italian island of Poveglia and you might just! During a time when plague was running rampant around the Roman Empire, where do you think they sent those who were affected? You guessed it! If that wasn’t creepy enough, in 1968 the island got a facelift of sorts – it was turned into a mental asylum where doctors conducted some very questionable experiments on patients. In 2004 the Italian government started to seek for anyone willing to develop the land. My advice, speak to your insurance company first.
White’s Gentlemen’s Club, London
Where would someone like Prince Charles have his bachelor party before his wedding? Why, the answer would be the White’s Gentlemen’s Club in London, of course. It is the most exclusive gentlemen’s clubs in the world and it has been since it opened in 1693. Some notable members of this VIP club are Prince William, Former Prime Minister David Cameron and Conrad Black. If you’re a woman then this club isn’t for you, unfortunately, unless of course you’re the Queen of England who has visited the club on two occasions in 1991 and 2016.
Chapel of The Ark of the Covenant, Ethiopia
The “Ark of the Covenant” is sacred to many, but its whereabouts are still widely contested. One answer to where the holy ark holding the tablets that Moses carried down from Sinai is that it is in Ethiopia. Entry into the location of the Ark of the Covenant is strictly forbidden to everyone, regardless of who you might be or what travel insurance you might have. A few years ago after a downpour, rumors spread that the site was flooded but no-one ever got to see the mysterious ark.
Ise Grand Shrine, Japan
As a dedication to the sun god, the Japanese Shinto built the Ise Grand Shrine. The beautiful shrine may or may not be the home of the ancient “Yata no Kagami” AKA the “Sacred Mirror” which is said to hold wisdom and honesty. Are you interested in a visit? The only people who are allowed into this religious shrine are priests and priestesses. Fit the bill?
The Mormon Church Secret Vault, Utah
As we’ve already learned from this list, mountains offer a great location for hiding or storing sensitive materials. The Mormon Church has taken advantage of one such location in Utah where they keep millions of family records in super-protected vaults. Are they being kept safe because they’re secret or because they’re going to be used in the afterlife? Who knows, but putting your files (and more) in a massive safe in a mountain is probably better insurance than burning it onto a disc.
Bohemian Grove, California
Another gentlemen’s club? Another collection of conspiracies? Yes sir! The massive 2,700 acre “camping ground” in San Francisco has been hosting two-week long gentlemen getaways since 1878. Before you start imagining campfires, roasted marshmallows and creepy stories, just hang onto that last detail. The “Illuminati-like” club has been noted with making questionable sorts of sacrifices and other idol-worship rituals. The members need to be invited to join and pay hefty amounts of money like a $25,000 joining fee. Some notable members who were part of this only-male club were Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.
