Singapore’s culture is a combination of many different countries’ cultures, and so you’ll hear many languages spoken while you’re there. The country’s official languages are English, Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil. You’ll also hear “Singlish,” a combination of English and words that are commonly heard in Singapore from several different languages.
The weather in this tiny country changes drastically throughout the year, and can be thought of in three phases. The northeast monsoon season is the wet phase, which spans from December to March. Next is the southwest monsoon season, which is the dry phase and occurs during late June to September. Lastly, the inter-monsoon periods include thunderstorms in the afternoons/early evenings and can be expected during October through November.
As Singapore is so multi-cultural, you can expect a wide variety of foods while you’re visiting. Popular and commonly found dishes combine dishes from Chinese, Malay, and Indian cuisines. Some popular dishes include Hokkien mee, Satay, and Roti prata, just to name a few. You can also find cross-cultural dishes that fuse together elements of the countries’ many cultural influences. Some of these include Katong Laksa, Mee rebus, and Kueh Tutu.
While you’re sight seeing in Singapore, you’ll find that there are so many things to do and experience that you’ll quickly run out of time. These are some sights you simply cannot miss. First, you must visit the Gardens by the Bay, which include a huge variety of plants displayed in breathtaking designs. If you’re into art, you must visit the National Gallery Singapore, which houses the largest public collection of modern art in all of Southeastern Asia.
Kampong Glam is the Muslim district of Singapore that blends together religious, historrical, and modern in one concentrated area. Here you will also find the famous kaya swiss roll at the Rich & Good Cake Shop. For those interested in Buddhist culture, Tianfu Temple, aka Thian Hock Keng, is Singapore’s oldest Buddhist temple and is also a beautiful place to visit.
