Airline meals don’t exactly have a reputation for being the best food around. Most people do not look forward to mealtimes while traveling on planes. The basic economy meals follow a typical pattern: a meat or veggie entree, a side salad, a side starch, and many times, a small dessert. However, for those traveling in business and first class, meals are quite a different story. As these customers typically at least double the price of an economy ticket, part of these costs cover some seriously gourmet meals. Here are some of the most impressive dishes you’ll find in different airlines.
Air New Zealand
Air New Zealand recruited chef Peter Gordon to plan the Business Premier class meal menu. On this meal plan, a traveler will find Lamb shank with gold kumara mash, green beans, spinach, and a pea medley with mint apple jelly, then a roasted salmon with sumac, quinoa salad and tahini yogurt sauce, and followed by white chocolate and rosewater panna cotta with pistachio cream.
Air France
France is quite well known for its cuisine, and this was taken into consideration when Daniel Boulus, a Michelin starred French chef, took on the job. The meals you’ll find aboard Air France’s first class include Provencal Lamb Chop with Zucchini Pesto and Tomato and Cheese Polenta, Atlantic Lobster with Coconut Curry Sauce and Black Rice with Bok Choy, and Beef Tederloin with Cranberry, Squash, and Spinach Custard.
Air Canada
Air Canada took on Vancouver chef David Hawksworth to design the meals aboard Air Canada’s international business class. The menu he planned typically features smoked salmon or grilled shrimp. The main entree is a steak or fish. The dessert includes a cheese plate or a flourless chocolate cake.
American Airlines
American Airlines has teamed up with four chefs to plan out the first and business class meals: Julian Barsotti, Sam Choy, Mark Sargeant, and Maneet Chauhan. The international meals include duck confit pot pie or slow cooked lamb osso buco. On domestic flights, first class passengers will be offered lasagna with hot and sweet pepper crema or grilled hciken with haricot vert and olives.
