Originally based on a book by Jeraldine Saunders (who was a cruise director in real life!), the show swept onto the scene in the late 70’s and held audiences captivated every week. Storylines centered around Captain Stubing, Dr. Bricker and a host of other permanent characters. Every episode would welcome guest actors, who would invariably became entangled romantically or otherwise – ending in stolen moments on deck and generally a lot of laughter down below.

Never one for weight loss plans, Marie (as she was known on the show) used to make endless lasagnas, cakes and pastries. Obsessed with feeding everyone, and assured of her wisdom in most matters, Roberts had everyone chuckling with her well-timed comebacks and marital sparring with her difficult husband Frank.
