The YouTuber
Jordan’s haircut was documented on a video and later uploaded onto a YouTuber’s channel called Maxbeatbox. The YouTuber is also Jordan’s father, and he captured the entire process, including Jordan’s mother’s reaction when arriving home to see her son’s new look.
The Surprise
It isn’t clear whether Melanie, Jordan’s mother, knew about her son wanting a new hairstyle. Nonetheless, nothing could have prepared her for what she was about to witness when she walked through the door on the day that this all took place.
Meet MaxBeatBox
This story of Jordan’s hairstyle and the reaction of his mother became known to the world from a video of the ordeal being posted onto YouTube by Maximillian, or Max, Reynolds. Max is a professional musician and the owner of the channel that the video was posted to.
Max Reynolds
Most of the videos uploaded onto his channel showcased him beatboxing. Max went viral in 2009 from a video of him beatboxing as a flight attendant that was uploaded onto the internet. He delivered the usual safety procedures to the flight passengers in his own way.
As A Parent
It’s clear that Max is a very creative person. As a parent, he has always encouraged this creativity in his children. It seems as if these creative encouragements have helped their three children (Josiah, Jordan, and Eliana) form clear career paths.
About Josiah
Josiah is Jordan’s older brother and has shown artistic inclinations from a very young age. He never played with regular purchased toys and always made his own. These skills didn’t go unnoticed as a teacher could identify Josiah’s talents. His action figures were even featured in an art gallery.
Blessings
The family has had a lot going on during the years. Max was featured on the game show Deal or No Deal. Although Max didn’t win the biggest prize of $1 million, he did receive an incredible $211,000. The entire family was shocked at the blessing they had received.
Jordan’s Dream
It was Jordan’s dream to attend an Envision Experience. The money received from Max’s appearance on Deal or No Deal made that dream become a reality. Jordan had received an invitation, but his parents didn’t have the money – until Max went on Deal or No Deal.
About Envision
Envision is an organization that’s built on the foundation of providing education through practical experience. It allows kids to sample their potential career choices through a variety of programs that are in addition to these children completing a formal education curriculum.
The Invitations
These types of organizations come at a pretty hefty cost. As a result, the thought of the institution didn’t cross Max’s mind again after seeing the invitations. However, Jordan still dreamed of partaking in Envision’s engineering program. This was made possible when Max went on Deal or No Deal.
Gifted Children
After receiving the Deal or No Deal prize money, Jordan went on to be awarded with the National Youth Leadership Forum. Josiah was given a place at Envision’s International Scholar Laureate Program that’s based in China. Meanwhile, Eliana was given the opportunity to join the Envision Game and Technology Academy.
A Proud Father
Max has expressed how proud he is of all of his children. He stated that he was blessed with three children who all know precisely what they want to do when they grow up. However, he has never let his desire for his children to succeed get in the way of having fun.
Their Parenting Style
It seems that Melanie and Max’s approach to parenting can be classified as very modern. Their support for their children’s desired careers is met with freedom of expression and encouragement. Thus, Max and Melanie didn’t stop Jordan when he decided to express himself through his hair.
Young Jordan
When Jordan was younger, he decided that he wanted to grow his hair into dreadlocks. A common misconception is that dreadlocks are dirty. In fact, this hairstyle requires a constant routine to maintain and care for the dreadlocks. The hairstyle also fits in with the family’s heritage.
The History of Dreadlocks
There is evidence that states dreadlocks were worn approximately 3,600 years ago. This evidence is backed up by murals found that depict Minoans (People who lived during the Bronze Age) wearing long, rope-like hairstyles. Mummified Egyptians have also been seen wearing dreadlock-like braids.
All About Dreadlocks
The origins of dreadlocks have been linked to the Mediterranean and the Middle East. However, it has more recently been found in Central America. The Pre-Columbian era saw priests wearing their hair in a dreadlock-like style. This evidence is from literature created in this period.
Present Day Dreadlocks
Dreadlocks are also commonly found in the present day. This hairstyle is incredibly popular among Maasai warriors. These warriors wear their dreadlocks thin and color the dreads red. It’s a common practice in countries in Africa such as Ghana and more.
The Rastafari Movement
Dreadlocks were a representation of the Lion of Judah in the Rastafari movement. This representation was seen as a signifier of Haile Selassi, who was the late Ethiopian Emperor. Haile Selassi is the central figure in the Rastafari religion. Wearing the hairstyle showed the wearer’s connection to the movement’s principles and ideas.
Bob Marley’s Role In Growing Awareness
The Rastafarian adoption of dreadlocks is considered to be the cause of this hairstyle reaching a wider audience. Bob Marley, who played a large role in growing the awareness of Rastafarianism, is said to be one of the figures to bring dreadlocks to a broader audience.
Another Outlook
Although dreadlocks hold a lot of symbolism in Rastafarianism, the hairstyle is worn as nothing other than an easy method of wearing hair. You have the ability to keep your hair in dreads for months or even years once it’s in dreadlock-form.
The Formation of Dreadlocks
The best way to begin creating dreadlocks is with freshly washed hair. However, you should avoid using any serums or conditioners in your tresses, as these products may leave your hair too soft to achieve forming your hair into dreadlocks.
Creating Dreadlocks
The next step is to comb and divide your hair into sections that are uniform. Each section should measure approximately one inch in width. After this, you should tie these sections separately so that they don’t separate from these divisions. The smaller the sections, the thinner these dreadlocks are going to be.
The Making of Dreadlocks
This hairstyle is achieved by backcombing each tail near the roots. A wire brush or dread comb is used to conduct this. The dreadlock’s tail needs to be tightly packed before moving on to the hair further away from the roots.
Wax It Up
Every single one of the dreadlocks needs to be individually waxed with a product that doesn’t contain any petroleum. This ensures that there is no buildup. Use a small amount of this petroleum-free wax and coat your dread, after twisting it into the correct shape.
Keeping the Style
Although it’s common for kids and teenagers to continually change up their looks, Jordan held onto his dreadlocks for long. He sported the look for nearly a decade and didn’t show any sign of changing it up until one day when the idea popped into his head.
Style Choices
Max has shown that he actively supports and celebrates his children’s style choices. A picture posted on his Facebook featuring his three children (Josiah, Jordan, and Eliana) and the caption, “I’m extremely proud that my children represent the full range of ethnic hairstyles.”
Time for a Change
However, everything changed when Jordan turned 14. He decided that his days of wearing dreadlocks were over. This meant that he would be cutting the dreads that he had been cultivating and maintaining for years and years. Melanie hadn’t seen his son without dreads since age five.
The Cut
From the Youtube video that was posted by Max, Jordan can be seen waiting patiently as his father goes about chopping away at Jordan’s nine-year-old dreadlocks. He sits wearing a determined face as his long dreads cascade over his bare shoulders.
Chopping
The video showcases a sped-up portion of the footage, where Max looks to be meticulously chopping off one of Jordan’s dreadlocks at a time. This is one way of cutting dreadlocks off. However, there is another option if you don’t wish to be left with a pixie cut or shaved head.
Keeping the Length
Staci Linklater, the director of Las Vegas hairstylists Globe Salon, also decided to try a new look away from dreadlocks. However, she wished to do so while still maintaining the length. Her years of experience allowed her to come up with a method to achieve this.
The Method
Staci first began by trimming the ends to enhance the overall state of her hair. The ends of the dreads are always going to be badly damaged, no matter how well-maintained they are. Doing this saves a lot of time and makes working the locks out easier.
The Final Step
Keeping the dreads damp and smothering in oil provides you with the ability to tease the locks out with a comb. The process takes a large amount of time. Staci spent 45 minutes on each dreadlock (of 105) to completely untangle it.
Maintaining
The maintaining of the hair after taking out these dreads can be tricky. The hair is accustomed to forming knots from being in a dreadlock-style for so long. Thus, the hair can begin knotting very easily, and further oil and braiding are usually necessary to keep the tresses smooth.
The After Effect
After removing her dreadlocks, Staci was able to enjoy a hair pampering treatment that she hadn’t experienced in a long time. Her hair was left silky and soft after receiving a deep-conditioning treatment and a cut-and-style. During the process of removing her dreads, she lost a foot of length.
No Care for Length
Jordan wasn’t bothered about maintaining his length. Thus, his father was able to remove his son’s dreadlocks in a more common and faster way. All he needed to do was simply chop these locks off. The end result was jaw-dropping.
Not Prepared
The sudden change in Jordan’s appearance wasn’t something that Melanie was prepared for, and she didn’t know what she was walking into. Melanie entered the family’s home in Roseville, California. The camera was turned to her to capture her reaction to her son’s new hairstyle.
Shocked
Melanie stopped in her tracks when she caught a glimpse of Jordan. She began to cry. It was an understandable reaction, as it had been nearly a decade since she had seen her son without dreadlocks. Melanie was lost for words and asked that the camera be turned off.
A Professional Cut
The following day, Jordan went to a hair appointment to receive his first professional cut in years. However, he hasn’t completely abandoned the style. Since his cut, he has started forming his hair back into the style despite completely cutting it off.
Old Habits
It seems that Jordan wasn’t a fan of sporting any other style of hair. Since chopping all of his dreads off, he has started the process all over again. He even uploaded a video to Youtube, where he showed people how to create their own dreadlocks.
Changing This Up
It’s prevalent for teenagers to explore new hairstyles. During this time of being a teenager, things are very unusual, and you’re still trying to figure out who you are, what you like, and how you want to express yourself. This is what Jordan did by trying out a new hairstyle.
