Rewind back to the year 1995, cause that’s when the very first mammal was ever cloned. Ahh, what a time. Anyways, scientists managed to clone a domestic sheep while using nuclear transfer and they actually decided to name the new animal…Dolly! Apparently the sheep’s name was inspired by Dolly Parton rather large bust. Ian Wilmut, who cloned the sheep, went on to explain his name choice, “Dolly is derived from a mammary gland cell and we couldn’t think of a more impressive pair of glands than Dolly Parton’s.” Ah-ha.

Surprisingly, when Dolly Parton heard the reasoning behind the cloned sheep’s name, she was actually flattered. She said, “she was called after me because she had big mammary glands. She gave me a lot of competition… but I always said there’s no such thing as baaad publicity.”
