In 2001, for two months Selleck was the lead role of Murray in the Broadway revival of Herb Gardner’s comedic play A Thousand Clowns. Now the critics were uniformly negative about Selleck’s performance, but they compared it unfavorably to the performance of Jason Robards, Jr., who won awards in the 60’s for playing the same character. However the playwright, Gardner, said he prefers Selleck’s portrayal over Robards, stating that “Selleck was the way he had always envisioned Murray.”
